Well, here's the thing...For school today, I used Halloween to wear my combat boots and as I walked into my Journalism teacher's room before school with my best friend to tell her we were collaborating on two articles, I decided to say I was the Mrs. Wulf from high school since she used to be "punk". Then I asked my Anatomy teacher to borrow his lab coat so I could be a mad scientist for Halloween. I put it on 8th period and said I was Abby from NCIS. Tomorrow night, I am going to be a mad scientist. My friend's going to tease my hair to make it huge. I bought this funky reading glasses and popped the lenses out from the Dollar Tree. I still need to figure out what type of clothing I'm going to wear under the lab coat, probably including my combat boots in some fashion...Oh, and I am trick or treating at my Anatomy teacher's house too :D Pictures!

Memorial Auditorium, once the hottest sport in Buffalo, now being dismantled

by Ashley Yager

Riding the Metro rail down to Erie Canal Harbor constantly reminds fans that a very sad end is near for the building that still has the voices of Ted Darling, Van Miller, and Rick Jeanneret reverberating off the rafters.

The demolition of Buffalo Memorial Auditorium has begun this past January. The sporting arena, which was also used for concerts, dog shows, circuses, wrestling matches, and political events, has been idly waiting for the verdict on its future since 1996 while nestled next to the waterfront deep in downtown Buffalo.

The Aud, as dubbed by many, was opened on Oct. 14, 1940 to replace Broadway Auditorium, the only convention hall in Buffalo, and as a public works project to halt the Great Depression. After it became accessible, various different sports teams caused spectators to endlessly erupt in cheers.

The Buffalo Bisons of the American Hockey League skated from 1940 until the Buffalo Sabres franchise began in 1970. The Buffalo Braves of the National Basketball League shot three-pointers from 1970 to 1978 before being moved to San Diego, California. The Buffalo Stallions of the Major Soccer League was based out of Buffalo from 1979 to 1984 while the Buffalo Blizzard of the National Professional Soccer League started in 1992. And the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League began playing there in ‘91.

Musical acts such as Frank Sinatra, The Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Joel, Rolling Stones, and, yes, the king himself, Elvis Presley, entertained audiences at the Aud.

But, time has passed and Memorial Auditorium’s time has unfortunately run out.

“The Aud was a great place, unless you had to use the bathroom! It was a great place and in a way, [I’m] sorry to see it go,” says science teacher Ralph Critelli.

The building is being taken apart piece by piece to make room for a Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World store, museum, and public plaza. Around 2,000 tons of asbestos and other harmful materials have been removed prior to the deconstruction.

Don’t fret Buffalonians, an optimistic future is being planned for the space where the 450,000 square-foot structure stands.

According to buffalorising.com, a canal side project is currently underway to enhance the water front. The 20-acre development costing $315 million will have features such as waterfalls, locks, an above ground level canal, ice-skating, an underwater tunnel, vendors, shops, towpaths, canal boats and barges, restaurants, a replicated milling wheel, and more.

If all goes as planned, the project has the potential to create approximately 1,000 new jobs.

“I think getting rid of Memorial Auditorium and making it into a destination is a good thing,” says Matt Kresge, special education teacher. “It’s long overdue.”

On a side note, city-sponsored live and online auctions have been held to raffle of the “blue” seats from the Aud. The highly-toted “orange seats” are supposedly expected to be auctioned off late this spring due to public demand.

According to The Big Read, the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books on their list.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicise those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

1. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
2. The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien
3. He quickly skims the menu at a favorite SoHo eatery and orders: the pizza with black truffles, please.

The NHL's No. 1 pest is ready to dish - about food, fashion and a most curious job as an intern.

At Vogue magazine.

"People seem to find it strange that I worked there," the New York Rangers forward said this week. "I don't."

"Fans see my on-ice character, my persona. Pushing it as far as it can go. Play it to the max, crazy. Sometimes over the line," he said. "Off the ice, what do I do?" he said. "I'm in love with music. I'm in love with clothes."

With occasional hits on MTV and the dating scene with Elisha Cuthbert and Rachel Hunter, he's more than hockey's best-known agitator.

Avery made People's "Sexiest Scars" list for a gash on his lip and recently showed up in a tabloid gossip column, where his head-to-toe black outfit at an R.E.M. concert looked "straight out of a 1998 J.Lo video."

So much energy, so many interests. But how to put them all together?

One night before the playoffs, in a hotel room in Pittsburgh, he wrote a letter to Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour.

"I was wondering what I would do this summer," he said.

Pretty soon, the 28-year-old Avery reported for work in a Raf Simons dress shirt, nice jeans and a bow tie.

During his month at the bible of couture, Avery did most everything. He helped set up photo shoots, served as guest editor for the Men's Vogue Web site and just wrote a farewell essay. Didn't get coffee for the bosses, but made copies.

Oh, and he spilled a plate of beef Stroganoff over a woman in the cafeteria.

"Got her pretty good," he said.

Making a mess, that's sort of how Avery does it in hockey.

He once led the league in penalty minutes and during this year's playoffs, Avery parked himself in front of New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur, waving his hand and stick in his face.

The next day, the league put in the so-called "Avery Rule" to prohibit such shenanigans - he got his revenge by scoring three goals in the series victory. But he lacerated his spleen in the following round against Pittsburgh and was finished.

Then came the invitation from Vogue to work for minimum wage. He'd seen the movie "The Devil Wears Prada," a supposed send-up of Wintour and the magazine, but hesitated to draw comparisons.

"Vogue is a very private place," Avery said, softly.

At least one former opponent liked hearing that Avery was following a pursuit that dealt more with YSL than NHL.

"Hey, he's making the most of it," said former Buffalo tough guy Rob Ray, now a Sabres broadcaster. "You've got a short period of time to lay the groundwork for after-hockey or whatever. Too many other guys sit back and, when they're done, they try to figure out what they're going to do. He's smart."

"He's got personality. And I think that's something that the league is lacking. And I think the league just wants 750 robots. But this guy walks to his own beat," he said.

His own look, too. Despite so much time around fashionistas, Avery said he's still dresses the same.

"I think personal style is exactly that: Do your own thing, wear what you feel comfortable in, and what you feel confident in," he said.

At lunch, that meant a black newsboy cap, a white T-shirt, black athletic shorts and something else on his must-have list for men, a nice watch.

His quick list for women: flats, vests, knee-high socks, skirts and T-shirts.

In the next week, Avery will fashion his future. Along with Coldplay and Pearl Jam concerts, a screening for the film "Gonzo" and a trip to Paris for a men's show, he'll pick where to play next season.

A free agent, Avery said he's not worrying.

"My biggest stress right now is finding a tour bus for the Latitude Festival in northern England," he said.

He did make time to write an essay that's now posted on www.mensvogue.com.

"Not bad for someone who didn't graduate high school," he said.

That said, be wary about teasing him over the notion that a rugged hockey player has a passion for high style.

As he writes, anyone who razzes him might wind up getting their behind kicked "by a very expensive pair of shoes - and that they'll probably match both my belt and my shirt."

Thanks NHL.com

I'm home. I don't want to be home. Other than the bugs, a cabin without insolation, crappy showers, and mainly holes to pee in unless you want to walk all the way up to the resort, I would rather be back in Ottawa.
I body surfed the Ottawa River and my raft flipped at the Butterfly rapids...this is the girl who is terrified of water...remember that. I kept my cool unlike one of my cabinmates who got swept down the current with me.
I met a British guide named Pikey who sat with me on the bus up there, cutie, so nice, wonderful accent. Our river guide's name was Matt, beautiful eyes, all around hot stuff. Our cabin took a picture with him after :D Ryan aka Carrot Top helped us bring our raft up for lunch and he was mean to Jenna. :]
We went to these caves today and our guide's name was Dan, also a cutie. We took pictures of him.
I am convinced Canada has the cutest men ever. Ever ever ever.

I am beat though. These bug bites are annoying, I'm still feeling it from working my booty off rafting, and I'm stiff from the ride home even though my friend Dan was a nice headrest.

Elise! I will read your updates tomorrow, hopefully!!

Night.

List your top ten favorite <s>men/celebrities/footballers</s>hockey players.
2. Answer all the question listed.
3. Make a post!

1. Mike Weber
2. Daniel Briere
3. Jason Pominville
4. RJ Umberger
5. Soupy Campbell D:
6. Mike Richards
7. Jordan Staal
8. Brooks Laich
9. Antione Vermette
10. Kimmo Timonen

So, what do you like most about 2?
I love the fact that he stills gets IDed at bars when he is 30 years old. And I also love the fact that he admits he had kids really young so he was forced to grow up faster. Smart, Daniel, unprotected sex, real good role model.

If you could do anything to 4, what would it be?
:] Aww, RJ Umberger. A lot, I'd do a lot.

Who would you choose between 5 and 7?
JORDAN STAAL! I'm still kinda pissed off at Soupy.

Out of a ten, how much would you rate 1?
Mike Weber? 1000000.

What do you find most attractive about 1?
How tall he is, he's a giant. And I love his nose and the way he squints all the time. His smile. And the fact that he has a tattoo in honor of his best friend who passed away.

If you could go out with 3, what type of date would you go on?
Aww, Pommers! He's my hero. We'd go to a little restaurant in Buffalo and we'd chat about life because he's the nicest man I have ever met.
If 8 was a type of season, which season would it be?
Brooksie. *grins* Spring, you know, pretty unpredictable weather.

Why is 10 not higher up your list?
I forgot about him and his cute little shortness.

So what does 10 have to do to be brought higher up?
Nothing, I love him.

What would be the ideal situation for you for 2 and 4?
:] I would make them take me ice skating in Wachovia Center, all alone...fun time on the ice.

Which two people would you want to be stuck with on a desert island?
Weber or Vermette. Vermette is so fine.

Marry, shag, or kiss - 4, 6. 8.?
4. Kiss.
6. Marry.
8. Shag.

What do you hate most about 7?
Nothing really.

Have you ever thought how you'll react when you meet 3?
I have already met Jason Pominville, twice. The first time I didn't say much. The second time I was like "Look! There's no place like Pominville." Silly, man, giggling him ass off with T-bo.

Have you seen 1 and 2 together on tv before?
Nope. I would love that.

Have you ever dreamt about 6?
Nope, I love Mike Richards a lot though.

Who would you take to a prom/ball with you?
HAHAH. Not Soupy...he is a bad, bad, bad boy. Either Staal or Weber, they're the youngest.

Cuddle, glomp, or kiss - 1, 3, 5.?
1. Kiss.
3. Cuddle.
5. Glomp.

If you could give anything to 10, what would it be?
A hug. I would give him a big, giant, hug.

Out of all of them - who would you:
Kick? BRIAN CAMPBELL DESERVES A KICK IN THE NUTS...
Kiss? :] Most of them. Weber fo sho.
Pinch cheek? Weber..he's silly and adorable.
Run away with? Mike Weberrrr.
Act like an idiot with? Brooksie.
Cry on? Jason. He wins.
Take to see your parents? Considering I have a very iffy relationship with my parents, probably none of them. Unless it was Pominville or Weber. My mom wants me to marry Weber or Toews. That's who I forgot, Toews. Fuck.
Bungee jump with? NONE OF THEM BECAUSE I REFUSE TO BUNGEE JUMP!
Cross dress with? I have a feeling Jason and I would have a lot of fun with that.
Swap lives with for a day? Pommers. I want to see how nice he is.

I react many different ways. But I'm going to roll with how I almost reacted today. I can't even speak the words without my voice getting caught and high pitched and I can feel the tears ready to spring.
Basically, I cry.
I throw tantrums and I swear.

Someone pounded on the door, “Will you stop fucking each other’s brains out in there?!” Thomas Vanek yelled.
“You’re just jealous because you get none!” Danny yelled back as he slid out and collapsed on the bed next to me.

“SHUT IT BRIERE!” Thomas snapped and stomped off.

I giggled, breathing hard, “Hockey players.”

Danny started to nibble my ear. I giggled harder and distracted him by ticking him.

“Stopppp!” Danny whined as he writhed around, attempting to get away from me. I haven’t seen you without him attached to your hip for a week!” Danny cried out with fear in his eyes.

“I’m sorry, baby. That’s why I married you, we both understood that.”

“Just don’t fall in love with him.”

            “No promises,” I said, sighing.

“Why couldn’t you have lied just to make me feel better about myself?”

“That would be lying,” I said simply as my cell phone buzzed with an incoming text. I leaned over and grabbed it off the bedside table, flipping it open to a text from Jochen. ‘You, me, dinner. 7 o’clock. Dress nice.’ I grinned and sent an ‘okay’ back.

            “What’s so exciting?” Danny asked.

“Jochen just asked me on a date to dinner. I need to go get ready,” I said as I got off him.

Danny’s eyes darkened while he sighed. An icy feeling swallowed me, I felt like I had just popped a three year old's balloon.

             “Danny, I could…”

He cut me off as he got off the bed and pulled his boxers on, “No. Don’t let me spoil this for you. Go have fun.” He walked over to the bathroom and shut the door behind him.

I just sat there, staring at the door. The barrier between us made me feel like I had just created a huge gap in our marriage. I heard the shower turn on to hide his sobbing. Knowing I had thought correctly I got off the bed, dressed and left the room. I was shaking in a silent fit of my misery as I hurried to my room.

Seven o’clock rolled around as I stepped out onto the front porch. I was wearing a sea-foam green party dress that I found abandoned in my closet. It fit perfectly and I was still wondering how I had forgotten about it. I didn’t even remember buying it as a matter of fact. I stole matching heels that had strings cress-crossing up around my shins from Max’s girlfriend. My hair was in a basic up do that Sheila concocted. A few curls fell over my eyes with my perfect makeup. Everything looked perfect, seemed perfect…except my heart.

Jochen stepped outside. He was wearing form-fitting black dress pants with a matching suit coat. His dress shirt was sea blue with a…sea-foam green tie.

“You are so hot!” I spit out and then gathered my senses as my face heated up. “I mean, you’re very handsome Jochen.”

He grinned, “You look-” His face fell. “Sad.”

My eyes began to tear and I blinked rapidly to clear them, “Yeah, about that...” I trailed off, looking at anything but his eyes.

He promptly walked over and gathered me in his arms. My body tensed and he quickly let go. I walked away, sitting on the top step on the porch. A tear escaped my eye and began to fall, he caught it. Jochen balled that hand into a fist and put it to his chest as he looked down at me. He wasn’t going to ask me to explain. If I really wanted him to know he knew the words would find a way out.

Moments passed and the hand holding my runaway tear was still pressed against his heart.

“I upset Danny,” I whispered. “He asked me not to fall in love with you. He thinks you’re going to steal me and I heard him crying after I told him I was coming to dinner with you.

“Jochen, I feel so horrible!” I sobbed and molded myself to him. He held me tight and I felt the fist that still held my stray teardrop on my lower back. He began to rock as I shook, attempting to stop the emotions and try to save the makeup Sheila and I worked so hard on.

After my sobbing subsided, I nestled my cheek on his shoulder and looked up at him. Jochen wiped the final tears off my open cheek with his free hand, “I’m sorry.” He said softly and cupped my face.

I pulled away in confusion. He explained, “For causing this to happen with Danny. I don’t want to hurt your marriage, I really don’t. The love between you two is so visible even someone blind could see it. You two are each other’s biggest influences and strengths. Never let me come between you. You can love me; you can even fall in love with me, that’s something you simply cannot prevent. But if that does happen, I will not allow you to ruin everything with him because of me.”

“He means everything to me. Everything. He’s the reason I am who I am and when I think of love, he pops into my head.”

Jochen’s eyes saddened at little, “Promise to give me a chance in your heart.” He opened his hand and placed his palm on my cheek.

I looked directly into his eyes, placing my hand over his, “I’m giving you that chance right now.”

He smiled. I leaned up to kiss him, but he turned me around.

Danny was standing there; tears were threatening to fall out of his eyes, “I heard everything.” He said with a weak smile.

“I meant everything. I’m sorry.” I said as I rushed over to hug him.

“Don’t be. You look too gorgeous to be upset.”

Jochen spoke up, “You look fantastic and absolutely stunning. Thanks for the dress size, Danny.”

I turned to look at Jochen. He grinned sheepishly with crimson cheeks.

“I knew it!” I yelled.

Danny laughed and pushed me towards Jochen, “No problem, Yoyo. Go have fun, baby.”

I turned and kissed him with everything I could muster, causing the tears to spill from his eyes. I caught one and kissed my fist before first placing it against my heart and then his, “Thank you.” I whispered, putting my forehead against his.

His reply was, “Anything for you.”
